Gen Y Goes to War (MTV Polls Pro Troops, Pro War, Pro America)

It's not quite man-bites-dog. But the day we have something nice to say about MTV sure comes close. And that day looks like today.

While surfing through the news section of MTV's Web site, we happened to stumble across its "At War With Iraq" link, and it sure belies the cable network's spoiled, Generation Y image. For example, in an MTV poll attempting to distinguish between its viewers' support for the war and their support for the troops, the results were pretty amazing. An overwhelming 60% reported that they supported both the troops and the war. Some 37% answered that they opposed the war but nonetheless supported the troops. That left only a tiny 3% who oppose the troops as well as the war.

If you stopped reading, you missed this:

Tony & Tacky Ranger Rosaries: That's what the folks at St. Mary's High School in Annapolis, Md., are calling the rosary beads they are making for the troops in Iraq. EWTN reports that the beads -- designed by St. Mary's parishioner and National Guardsman Frank Ristaino and strung along olive-green parachute cord -- were first sent to soldiers deployed to Bosnia. They proved popular, and the Catholic chaplain for the 82nd Airborne recently asked the school to make more for his troops. "We're giving them hope," one of the students told the Annapolis daily newspaper The Capital. "They'll know God is watching over them while they serve our country."

Keep in mind, the MTV crowd/generation are the ones fighting the war!! Granted, a lot of them are lazy and nonproductive
but a lot are a great asset to our society.

This is not exactly a patriotic act. MTV is afraid that they will be losing this segment of the "youth market" forever if they or one of the artists on their playlists really screw up like the Dixie Chicks. MTV could be painted as "enemy music television" (EMTV?) and these soon-to-be-vetrans might avoid the Tokyo Rose of 2003.

In such a scenario, MTV stands to lose a lot of advertising money if they cannot deliver viewers because of boycotts. This is just a hedge against any future problems.

They're not watching it there, but you damn well better believe that they'll be watching it when they get back. An "antiwar/antitroops" message will play hell with that.

I dont believe I said they ARE watching Mtv. I said they are the MTV generation. I do know soldiers who are currently deployed who DO watch MTV when they are home. My point was that just because someone watches MTV, that doesnt make them
or their opinions insignificant. Actually, there isnt much on TV, including MTV that is worth watching.
