I hesitate to say this for fear of flames, but I.E. handles HTML syntax errors more gracefully than some other browsers. When I was doing HTML professionally, we used Opera to test our work, because it was unforgiving.

I had this problem in all 3 of my browsers (IE 6, Netscape 4.8 and Mozilla 1.3).
