***Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - Day 8 - LIVE THREAD***
Various | 3/27/2003 | Me

Posted on 03/26/2003 9:04:14 PM PST by Centurion2000

Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A breif description of what the graphic is would help:

Special thanks to null and void for keeping these running over the weekend and Monday, to all of you for keeping these threads alive, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Fox - U.S. to step up Iraqi campaign in the coming hours due to better weather. Ollie confirms that combat tempo has really increased since the weather broke.

Yes, where the heck are these coming from, the launchers aren't that small I don't think. It's is a big area bit I wonder exactly what is underground over the whole of Iraq. I know we can do underground radar tomography now with trucks. They used it at ground zero to look at utility lines and such.

Why is it that the general message to keep the banter to a minimum is met with such hostility?

I think I have been quite fair to all sides on this matter - I have yet to request that any post be pulled, I have yet to berat anyone specifically.

I started these threads because I (ego!!) have no other way of knowing whats going on (access only to Euro-Media). Free Republic is the only alternative and this thread seemed the best way to gather the significant events in one manageable place. Others found this to be a good idea and the thread took off.

Since the threads started, I have received several e-mails asking me to "police" the thread - I have consistantly said that I would not do this. Instead I would remind everyone to stay on topic as much as possible. I have consistantly said that banter is healthy and the topics such as pin-up girls etc have tradition.

So, just because you see this reminder does NOT mean that I am berating you for too much banter - simply that you use your own common sense and a bit of tact while posting. If I use an example (burgers!) it is because that was the topic that caught my eye. Not that I have anything against food talk!

So, lets just calm down a bit - no one wants to censor anybody!!

Well it is well known we blew by most of southern Iraq. The unpopulated, desert areas probablly haven't even seen our troops. This is an annoyance, nothing more.

have repeatedly said that the banter needs to be kept down, not eliminated! I have no problem with banter and engage in it a bit myself when there are no events to discuss. However, when the first several hundred posts of the thread are overwhelmingly banter, someone trying to catch up or inform themselves is confrinted with a lot of "useless" posts. After reading about 30 or so back to back, one starts to skim through and can miss information they actually want to read. As to "news only", that was the intent of this thread - a place to gather related topics and disucss them in general as oppossed to indepth discussions of one topic. Making friends is a fringe benefit of this type of thread and the usual back and forth IS tolerated - no one has been harrassed for this - we simply need to keep to the topic as much as possible. Is that really too much to ask?

I couldn't agree more, I am not on here til late & trying to catch up on "news" is very difficult when there is a lot of "banter"! It is very difficult to sift thru pages & pages of OT to find a few posts on topic. The admin of this site would suggest those who want to chat & make friends, should go to a chat room.
