One of the very few politicians that transcended politics and partisan politics. If there were more like him we'd all be better off.
A personally sad day for me as a New Yorker and as an appreciater of a great mind with a sense of decency. I can't count more than a handful of politicians that I truly admire. I have one less to admire today.

He was a very smart and decent man. He wrote an article in last month's Washingtonian naming the most effective president during his service: Ronald Reagan. He was of a class too rare in the Senate these days.

He was in the great liberal tradition that the new democrats are busy trying to beat out of the party.
God rest his soul. His calm voice and reasoned appeals, even when I disagreed, will be missed.
