He wasn't merely detained, he was subject to an illegal arrest. (Detentions magically transform themselves into "arrests" past a certain time point) The "reasons" you gave do not pass Constitutional muster, per Terry.

Citizens don't have to answer questions put to them by police. The Supreme Court says so. See Terry. Unless I am mistaken, Terry was an unreasonable search and seizure case involving whether a subject has a reasonable expectation of privacy in an automobile. Could you please elaborate?
