Seems to me that there was a command failure here.
Not because of PCness--just plain stupidity.
Every war has a few guys start going wig just before it happens. We had a few of these in the USMC just before Desert Storm (none involving Muslims of any flavor).
The policy back then was to simply transfer the offending individual to a Stateside desk job. The fact of the transfer happening right before the war, combined with a "velvet stiletto" fitness report, would guarantee that the individual in question would have no career after the war was over.
The 101st didn't do that. They left the guy in theater.
That was downright stupid.

If this person didn't see the United States as his country, (and his choice of words indicates that was not the case), then he had no business anywhere near the war zone, especially not in a U.S. uniform.
I agree, someone really screwed the pooch on this one.
