Uncoscious, but alive.

Still in a medical bed (not a hospital I'd wager!) .....

Which is why his troops keep fighting - they don't know/can't tell if he'll still recover, stay in power (and then kill them for not fighting!); or die and let the survivors in power kill them!;

.... so they wait and put up minor fire until the whole bunch in charge get killed so they can surrender.

In the mean time, they don't know whether there ARE killers in charge or not. But if they fight hard (in a localized spot) they will get killed bu US/UK troops.

So they don't fight hard, but don't surrender either.

Instead, they try to disappear until they know who has won..
