I was told by Marines - who knew the score - that they were serving America. And that is how I believe many service men and women view their contribution. It is for America and what America stands for that they serve. The majority of Marines abide by a motto "God, Country and Family"

The father is trying to drag his memory back down into the barrel....of illegitimacy and dishonor. He's probably annoyed that there's a wife in California who will get the GI insurance money.

Politics has become the personality. My frank opinion is that it was right to criticize Clinton and it is also right to criticize President Bush. Debate should be respectful and it is every Americans’ duty to become informed. Mine is a minority opinion, respect for institutions because the provide us with order is gone. There is no respect for the Presidency except by those who respect the President. The adage that reasonable minds can differ no longer applies.

One would think there's plenty of news to go around without making a bitter family member's feelings into some sort of news flash. Makes as much sense as repeatedly reporting on weekly "anti-war" protests, which were never unexpected and are hardly representative of the vast majority of Americans. Now, I would be interested in how many of the protestors are sincere and how many are there for other reasons. That would be the real story.

NOBODY can defend X42's dereliction of duty and disregard for the oath he took. NO President before X42 came even CLOSE to being derelict in defending the Constitution as Commander in Chief, even Jimmy Carter (a few have crossed the line domestically, but that's a different matter). Kosovo had NOTHING to do with defending America. No President before X42 has ever so completely, sytematically, and to a large extent successfully weakened our military, which is why it took until now for us to have the strength to carry out this war.

X43 is specifically carrying out his Constitutional duties. The same people who are furiously trying to get antiwar comments from the dead soldiers' loved ones would be doing nothing of the kind if X42 was still in office.

Most of us aren't disagreeing that the father's loss and sense of grief are horrific, just his misplaced target of blame. Who knows, we might feel the same way if it happened to us, wanting to lash out at the first person we could?

BUT, during times of war, it's more prudent for everyone to think before they speak, which includes families of service members all the way to Hollywood celebrities.

Don’t you get it? These people see President Bush every statement you made is identical to how they think. They are just as certain that President Bush is a criminal and the war has nothing to do with the stated reasons. There is no difference between the way we view Clinton and the way they view President Bush. None. There is no similarity between the way President Bush is viewed by those who support him and the view of those who despise him. The only way to understand the depth of their mistrust is to remember how you felt about Clinton.

I have counseled with many people who have lost loved ones. It is quite normal for people to immediately lash out and say things they will later regret. Some people blame God, which is much worse than blaming a president.

It is best just to let them vent, forget what they say in the heat of the moment and wait for them to get themselves together. One should never let utterances in the midst of fresh grief be the last word.

In this father's case, knowing he is black, how uniformly blacks voted for Gore, and seeing polls showing most blacks are against the war, I think there was so much anger against Bush before his son was killed that his reaction is tinged by a lot more than grief.
