It happened a lot in Vietnam. Fragging was generally a means of changing commanding officers by soldiers expressing their dissatisfaction with leadership. It didn't involve collaboration with the enemy, or enemy participation. This sounds more like an enemy attack than an expression of low morale. Apparently, one of the enemy might have been an American soldier.

Individuals in my unit and myself had to testify as expert witnesses in several court martials on fragings. Most of them were the results of people getting caught involving drugs and were usually rear area units.

But you're right, they were designed to remove an undesirable officer.
