Apparently in Arabic the pronunciation is closer to "gutter." However, since we are not CNN, I do not understand why it isn't pronounced "KuhTAHR" the way we used to. After all, we don't say "Espana" or "Deutchland."

absolutely.

and from now on, whenever i hear french people referring to the United States as etas unis, i fully intend to politely remind them "for you, that would be the United States, you arrogant, smelly, cheese eating maggot."

I clicked on the sound bite and it sounds more gutteral with much more emphasis on the first syllable making an "aw" vowel sound. But also the second syllable isn't an "uhr" sound, but more open "ahr." Nothing near the annoying "Kutter."
