My personal theory is that it was Helen Thomas wearing a set of "funny nose and glasses" she picked up from the gag store.

Ahh... Well, I came up with it independently... even mentioned it here:

I don't know whether they got him or not but it seems to me from the video that Saddam has either: 1) aged an awful lot; or 2) was substituted for by someone's 88-year old aunt wearing a discarded beret from the 1930s.

I think it was Helen Thomas... though the content of the statement sounded too reasonable and even-handed to be coming from her.
