Not entirely true, in the mid-70s, when we had lots of radar, the old methods were still taught, especially for use when you couldn't light up your radar -- I did some serious gaming in a black vault in which I was a threat commander in a well-known theater. We took out most of the TPQ-36 and other counterbattery radar early on almost every time.

I always thought it would be useful for the boys and girls to learn the old methods except hasty crater analysis, which I thought was just a SWAG.
