I believe the appellation "copperhead" comes from some source other than the reptile. I'm sure someone versed in Am Hist will pop in and provide detail. Actually, among the four American poisonous snakes, the copperhead is the least aggressive and venomous. Having lived in Texas among the moccasins, the copperheads are easy to deal with.
