The Pope is a great man, CROSSHIGHWAYMAN. He has done more good in this world than anyone on this thread has, I can assure you.
The Pope's comment is fair and just: we are taking a chance. We are putting the lives of our brave troops on the line and setting a dangerous chain of events in motion.
I believe we are justified in so doing and that President Bush is doing the right and necessary thing.
But I also believe that we are accountable for our actions and that we have to be prepared for the consequences.
I agree and am appalled at some comments here.
Really leaping and bounding to extropolate from the pronouncement something that is not there.
The Pope is right:
"Those who decide that all peaceful means that international law makes available are exhausted assume a grave responsibility before God, their conscience and history,"
What, pray tell, are people arguing with? This statement is true and the statement does NOT say those assuming this responsibility are wrong.

Nowhere did I accuse the Catholic Church of collaboration with the Nazis.
And regarding the merits of claims made by John Cornwell and many Jewish leaders, that's a debate for another thread.
I simply pointed out the fact that the Church sat on it hands during the Holocaust in the same context that the Church sat on it's hands while Saddam gassed thousands of his own people and murdered at least a million.....yet NOW issues this hypocrital warning to the United States about it's "grave" responsibility before God...for doing something GOOD!
It's obscene.
Oh, and as far as your hollow judgement accusing me of lying about the Catholic Church...the fact is Bishops from Germany, France and Poland have apologized for the Catholic Church's silence during the holocaust.
Would you like to warn them about the sin of lying as well?
