This is as coherent a portrait of what's really going on as I've seen yet. Thanks for posting this excellent article.

Excellent article bump!

I've been wondering all along if Bush has kept this in mind as a deliberate Plan B. Instead of allowing the U.N. to continue to flounder ineffectively and as a U.S. straight-jacket, let it commit suicide so that we may get about the business of forging new permament alliances.

If Chiraq has been bribing Turkey with EU entry if they stiff the USA northern front, France has become an enemy in this new kind of war. Turkey, well, just another Islamic hell hole using the Latin alphabet and few flush toilets.
The world is at war with us. We must ride to the sound of the guns now and kill the bastard$.
If we continue to dither, we may die from a million paper cuts.

This author does a good job of reflecting the frustration felt during these trying times.

It looks like Gwyn Prins makes a solid effort to put all of this into context here.

Because, eventually, at a more propitious time, he is going to tell (Steve Hatfill is eventually going to want his old job back). And that means that the discrediting of the UN is a certainty. The only question is whether it will be sooner or later -- whether this is it, or whether Bush is going to let them flail about for one more round before delivering the coup de grace.

And that means that the discrediting of the UN is a certainty. The only question is whether it will be sooner or later -- whether this is it, or whether Bush is going to let them flail about for one more round before delivering the coup de grace. It's conceivable that Pres. Bush will let the U.N. keep going at it; at some point, the various weasels will start fighting among themselves. (How long do you think France and Germany can remain allies?) What if proposed resolutions appeared which were designed to split our opposition?
The U.N. may fall apart without Bush having to finish it off explicitly. It would be nice if the U.N. dissolved in such a way that no one could find an excuse to blame the U.S. for it.

Allen asks, "How long do you think France and Germany can remain allies"
We were a few points from Ann Merkel's Christian Democrats ruling Germany. (Merkel said she would have signed the Letter of 8). I doubt the Center-Right lose again. So the answer? Soon after the next German federal election.
