IMO there's a telltale smell of something fishy, here.
Brings to mind an old saying.
"Be careful of something that's just what you want it to be."

I never heard that one before, but I too detect a strange odor. The real motivation for terminating McClinden may never be known, but I am sure his offending a group of young conservatives was hardly the proximate cause.
