You make every abused wife or child sound like they were asking for it. Or that every POW was cooperating because they didn't try to escape. Maybe she thought escaping or talking would get her killed. She's 14. Give her a break

We are a church family and live in a sheltered community and I would NEVER invite a drifter home to work on my roof. That justs seems wierd; Mr. Smart obviously makes a good living doing something out in the "real" world and to understand allowing someone who gives only his first name to you gives me the creeps, thinking the Smarts have young children.

I don't think that Salt Lake City is exactly a sheltered community. They may not have the level of crime I enjoy here on the east coast, but it is far from being sheltered. I can appreciate that people want to teach family values that include charity. But you don't have to be too bright to know about evil people who will endanger that very same family.

Secondly, I understand Mitchell is an excommunicated LDS, in which case, I believe the Smarts would be forbidden from dealing with him.

Huh, WRONG!!! No body sane asks for abuse! Ok, she was 14, and does that mean she still thinks and acts like she was 4?

I, like everyone else, am elated that Elizabeth is back with her family. But I must question the lack of common sense and naivete of parents who would hire scuzzy bums off the street to come do work at their home.

Ultimately, we can thank the misguided "compassion" of liberal Dems for making it next to impossible to institutionalize these nutcases who do NOT belong on our streets.

Along the same lines is the kid that got away from Jeffrey Dahmer and went and found a cop. Dahmer caught up with him, told the cop he was drunk, took him home, killed, and ate him. I say don't judge a man (or little girl) until you've walked a mile in her moccassins.

BTW, to the other poster, a fourteen year ole will NEVER be a 'young adult' in this country.

Does a POW act like he is 4 because he doesn't escape?

It never ceases to amaze me that logic doesn't apply to a message board.
POW's are not walking in broad daylight unrestrained with thier captors either. POWs would have turned a 180 and ran like hell. In a group of people, 3 months after captivity, a POW would identify him/herself to friendlies to be liberated. POWs are always trying to find ways to communicate with the outside, and Last but not least a POW will always try to escape by any means possible while they are able. Elizabeth was not a POW, nor was she brainwashed.
Think logically please. Is she really a victim, or are we making her one?

The schools are full of abused kids. Why don't they tell someone?

they do! nobody listens...then they run...again logic please.

Kids tell thier abuse in many ways. Physically, emotionally and verbally...you just have to listen and ACT!

I did, I got my nephew out of a situation because I care and I listened!

School administration is not equiped to handle it. Try it sometime, you will learn.

Thanks for posting that info. I also know a boy who was sexually abused and did not tell until about a year after the lady left the home. He still has to testify against her & he is a mess.

Am I the only one to make the connection that she was gone for 9 months which is about the same amount of time it takes to bring a baby into this world? I know im going out on a limb here but this is the first thing I thought of when they said that she was found after being missing for that ammount of time. </tin foil hat>

We're not forbidden from contact with excommunicated people. The only instance I can think of is to not have sympathy with polygamy, but even then, one has to treat everyone the best way we can.

And rather than turn this thread too OT, privately FReepmail me with questions. I"ll answer them the best that I can.

In Sandy, where Elizabeth was found, it was startling to see, from what I've heard on the radio news. In Salt Lake City, not too startling. SLC is a big city.

I think it is possible that people can be naive without being religious. I cannot understand the link that they were naive because they are Mormon. I know of a few people in my social circle who I may think are a little naive when it comes to the real world. But, in many instances I am jealous that they have been fortunate to be so sheltered, and haven't encountered evil as much as I have in the world.

Funny you should bring up the Steinberg case. When I got a look at the photo of Wanda Barzee, I thought: "She reminds me of Hedda Nussbaum".
