Former Iraqi army Brig. Gen. Tawfiq Al-Yasiri told an opposition Kurdish newspaper last week that, "It is possible that with the start of U.S. air and missile strikes, the central government might lose control to command its bodies and over the Iraqi streets," he said.
"The information we received from the regions, which are under the Iraqi control, suggest that under such circumstances, some commanders in some military units, who are against the government, intend to operate along with the opposition and participate in the process of the Iraqi regime change. These commanders will take advantage of the right opportunity to carry out a military coup."
Al Yasiri also said the coup could take place before U.S. action.
It is also possible that Saddam could be killed by a close aide seeking to curry favor with the opposition and gain a top position in a successor government.
This can be dangerous for us, moreso now. Think about it, when a paranoid with a weapon suddenly realized that they are out to get him, he often strikes first.
Now this two-bit dictator reads this and knows he cannot trust anyone, maybe even his own sons, and who knows what could happen. Further, it means that he could likely cut off all direct communication with his henchmen, making it more difficult to track him down.

I read it this way as well. Saddam doesn't trust one of his boys around hime with a gun at all. Has the punk searched before letting him close. Can't remember which one.... they are both awful! ( Must be genetic! ) Saddam also makes it a point to kill anyone who starts looking twitchy. Apparently coups have been tried in teh past... one of his sons-in-law tried. He's dead now.
The iraqi army does not strikeme as one where initiative is a virtue...pity.

A. The U.N. sent inspectors into Iraq to find weapons of mass destruction - the same WMD Saddamn said he did not have. Forming new alliances, France, Germany, and Belgium, continually sought prolonged inspection times in their attempts to restrain the U.S. and Britian from attacking Saddam. The U.N. Council repeatedly ruled in thir favor.
B. Saddamn, while insisting (and convincing France, Germany, and Belgium) he had no WMD, at the same time threatened the U.S. and Britian to destroy them (WITH THE SAME WMD HE CLAIMED NOT TO HAVE) if they attacked Iraq.
C. The United States and Britian agreed that Saddamn had not complied with U.N. resolution 1440, had WMD, then attacked and removed Saddamn from power to prevent him (or other terrorists) from using them.
D. After the U.S. and Britian attacked Iraq, vast stores of WMD, chemical, biological, and yes - even some nuclear - were uncovered by the prevailing U.S. and British forces.
E. Saddamn and his two sons were tried before a U.N. tribunal and unaimously found to be enemies of minkind perptetuating mass murders on their own people of magnitudes and ferociouceness not seen since Adolph Hitler's actions created the word "genocide." They were summarily hung for their crimes against humanity. Regrettably the knots where incorrectly tied and the distance of the drop was not sufficient to break their necks. They swung and kicked for almost thirty minutes before strangling to their infamous historical deaths.
F. The Democrats in the United States had their worst election returns in the 2004 elections in that party's history.
G. George W. Bush was elected president for a second term in 2004 by the largest landslide in U.S. history.
H. Ditto for Tony Blair.
I. Hillary Clinton was defeated for his (grin) bid for reelection in New York State.
J. Thanks to the "footdragging" tactics of France and Germany througout the entire world crisis, the United Nations was made to be a laughing stock of historical proportions and was deemed irrelevent and impotent and consequently vaporized into nothingness as did it's predecessor - The League of Nations.

To illustrate this point, let me tell you a story:
From 1939 to 1944, the Wehrmacht fought all over the continent of Europe for Hitler, for his dreams, and for his ambitions. During that time, once war had begun, most of the German officer corps wouldn't have dreamed of a coup in Berlin. They had taken a personal oath of loyalty to Adolph Hitler, and the last thing a German Officer would do is violate his loyalty oath. However, there were exceptions.
There was a small group led by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, head of the Abwehr, who were doing whatever they could to upend the Hitler regime.
Canaris himself was godfather to a small group of officers in Berlin and Paris known as the Kreisau Circle. One of the leaders of the Circle was a bright young Eastern Front veteran, Col. Klaus Schenck von Stauffenberg.
He would be the officer who would deliver the suitcase containing the bomb to Hitler's headquarters in Rastenberg, East Prussia.
The bomb failed to kill Hitler, of course, and the plot collapsed. But understand that even during the period after Stalingrad, Germany's greatest military disaster, thoughts of a coup against Hitler were limited to a small circle of officers, mostly monarchists and men with socialist leanings. The moral of the story is rather simple: Saddam is much more aware of his "internal traitors" than Hitler ever was, and he moves as quickly as he can to liquidate his opponents. The Iraqi Army officer corps certainly doesn't have the initiative and drive of its German counterpart. These are not the kind of people who could bring off a coup.
It's a pipe dream to expect a coup. Anyone with any initiative in that army has been killed off by the Mukhabarat over the past ten years. Especially these poor fellas....
You know, I trusted these two guys behind me since the Old Days, I really did. I thought they were my friends. Now I find that they forgot to feed my cats....

We had a German foreign-exchange student live with us for a year. His grandfather was a Colonel and an ace in the Luftwaffe.
This man was proud to pass on to his children the fact that he participated in this assassination attempt.
Get this: This same German Luftwaffe Colonel actually served as a bodyguard to Hitler at Eagle's Nest. (Only the top Luftwaffe and Nazi Germany Heer (Army) heroes were allowd to "watch over" Hitler.)
Saddamn (and his impersonators) have gotta have a "pucker factor" going through the (anal) roof about right now?
