LOL I'd consider myself a relative newbie (only four months of FR under the belt) so this is awesome for me to figure out what everything else is.

This is going to sound odd, but I'm new to this. What does "bump" mean?

Bump is used when someone wants to post a reply to a thread simply to "bump" it back to the top of the "Latest Posts" list so more visitors will see it. BTTT - "Back To The Top" is used interchangeably with "Bump".
The latest posts page proceeds in an order (FROM THE TOP DOWN) of posts. If you BUMP a post it puts the thread in mainstream page, for more to read. It is also and at the same time a quick way of agreeing with a thread.

I guess that could be anytime, or no time.
But the answer is, as you have already stated, 42.
What I'm asking is, what is the question?
As you may recall, the creatures of supreme intelligence of all life forms (the mice, though once incorrectly thought to be dolphins) revealed their superiority over man and dolphin by providing the answer, which is, as you have previously stated, 42. They refused or were unable, however, to divulge the question.
As far as I know, the issue remains in controversy, Mr. Adams having taken it to his grave (along with, it seems, the entirety of the universe).
What do you really know of it (if anything - are you just blowing smoke)?

I think you nailed it actually.
I think his whole point was that it is in itself, a question that cannot be expressed by man.
And, like this thread, is ever changing.
But then, I might just be blowing smoke.

Seems a right thoughtful analasys of the meaning of those four hilarious volumes of utter nonsense.
But while not being one to get all philosophical about things (well, actually I am), it's made abundantly clear that, as all things change, all things end as well, and however improbable it may be, a colossal cessation of being is possible.
