MADRID: A Pakistani is among five men arrested in Spain on suspicion of involvement in the suicide attack on a synagogue on the Tunisian resort island of Djerba in which 21 people died, investigators said today.
The other four being held were described as Spanish nationals.
Reports immediately after their arrest in Valencia, in southwest of the country, on Friday had described them as of Tunisian origin, while the nationality of the other suspect, detained in the northern town of Logrono, had not been given.
All five were due to be transferred to Madrid to appear before the Audiencia National, Spain's top court for dealing with terrorist offences.
Police carried out several raids yesterday, including one on an apartment in the beach resort of Cullera and another on a food shop selling products conforming to Islamic dietary law.
The arrests were part of continuing investigations into a fire caused by a fuel tanker truck driven by a suicide attacker which engulfed the Djerba synagogue, killing 21 people, 14 of them Germans.
Spanish officials said the information which led to yesterday's arrests had been provided by French investigators.
Three men are under judicial investigation in France over the attack, one of them the brother of the driver of the suicide truck.
