Serial Molester Sentenced To More Than One Thousand Years

Saturday March 08, 2003 12:38am

Oklahoma City (AP) - A serial child molester has been sentenced to life in prison, plus one-thousand-460 years.

Gregory Wayne Myers was convicted of sodomy, failing to comply with the sex offenders registration act and seven counts of indecent and lewd acts with a child under age 16.

Oklahoma County District Judge Susan Caswell followed the jury's recommendation of sentences, which ranged from life to 120 years.

The judge ordered the nine sentences to run consecutively.

Myers was on probation for molesting another child when he was convicted of sexually abusing a nine-year-old girl in 2000.

He had three prior convictions of sexually abusing children when he was charged in 2000 with the latest offenses.

Reassignment to another parish or another country. Refusal to provide records of ongoing or previous incidents of abuse. Refusal to report accusations to the local authorities.

There's three - all of which the church has actually done and the Pope has refused to reverse.

Those are not actions of the Pope. Those are actions taken by bishops.

I don't hold the Pope blameless, but the Church's government is not nearly so centralized as you imagine. The Pope does not have an army of investigators who can monitor this kind of thing and send reports to Rome.

I fault the Pope for paying little or no attention to the process of appointing bishops, and allowing the Old Boys' Network to operate unchecked. There HAVE been changes made, btw. I have direct knowledge that the Cardinals in this country are no longer listened to when they recommend candidates for bishop, and that a network of laity has more influence than in the past.

If he were white he wouldn't have been sentenced at all.

You're not making sense. That kind of behavior, on the part of bishops, is precisely what is now forbidden.

The Church's record on covering up and shuffling abusers around is no worse than the record of the Boy Scouts and the government schools and many other institutions. It took decades for many institutions AND FOR PARENTS to grasp what was happening. There are plenty of stories of parents who refused to believe their children, or who thought that warning a priest or Scout master would put a stop to the abuse.

The Church's record is lousy, but it has nothing to do with the fact that the Church is Catholic, everything to do with the fact that the Church is a human society with human beings in it.
