Chinese in at Port of Los Angeles

Posted on 03/06/2003 11:01:34 PM PST by AnimalLover

QUESTION: If the Chinese were denied use of the old Naval Shipyard at the Port of Los Angeles due to security reasons, why are they taking over the old Todd Shipyard a short distance away? I have tried for over a year and no one can or will answer this for me. Can anyone help me?

Absolutley spot-on chronology. I was also active in the fight to keep COSTCO from leasing that entire property. As ALOHA RONNIE said, with the help of citizen activists in the city hall meetings, street protests, and cooperation with Senate and House members, we foiled the attempt, although the historic buildings of the Naval Base were razed. Once COSTCO was denied that expansion in Long Beach, they immediately approached Los Angeles Harbor. I'm surprised it's taken this long.

"...the Chinese Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) has had a presence at the Long Beach Naval Station in Long Beach, California since the early 1980’s.3 They lease a portion of the space directly from the city. (71) In 1997, they attempted to lease the entire former 144-acre Long Beach Naval Station. (72) COSCO planned to demolish the existing structures and build a new $200 million terminal, thereby allowing its 600 ships to sail directly to America’s shores without having to pass through U.S. Customs.4

I noticed a number of errros in the above:
1. COSTCO's presence was not at the Naval Station, but at the Long Beach Harbor.
2. COSTCO didn't plan to demolish the old Navy structures, that was a decision made by the city of Long Beach. The Navy turned over the closed base property to the city. LB owned and planned to raze the buildings, which they did. That was another on-going fight at the time.

Somewhere in the FR archives are many threads I posted re:COSTCO. I can't find them.
