Well-connected advisers tell me that if, as now seems likely, the UN refuses to back action against terror, Mr Bush will announce a "temporary" suspension of America's membership, to be accompanied by an offer: if the UN gets its act together and carries out long-overdue reforms, America (and its money) will return. But if there is no reform, the temporary withdrawal will, de facto, become permanent.

I don't like to get my hopes dashed. But even if this doesn't happen (Bush is talked out of it by Powell etc) - the fact that it is even being discussed at all is huge to me. But my take is that this will not happen. Hope I'm wrong. This is exactly what we should do. Now that we've played this U.N. game we need an end-game strategy where we come out morally strong, not like some whipped puppy-dog.

I think this whole UN fiasco has been orchestrated by Bush for this very reason. He's wonderful at strategery if so.

As you have seen with your own eyes, unless the UN has the muscle to back a resolution.... it is worthless, ergo deduct the US armed forces and what you have is a debating society.

Even IF more allied troops came after D-Day June 6th, 1944 (sorry, i can't find that information, but i know it's true), one must admit we have a very formidable ground force surrounding Iraq.

Over 3 times the "punch" of D-Day, June 6, 1944 (which until now was the largest invasion in history from what i have read).

Why would the allied forces hold back troops from the Normandy Invasion? As a former military planner that seems unlikely, unless you mean REMFs.

No, he might have done it private. Getting it into the press would complicate the issue. We want to focus on Saddam and the consequences for failure to disarm, not open up a public debate on UN membership today.

The consequences for UN failure to act is a matter for discussion after next week.

Well, it seems more like Pres. Bush is ALLOWING the UN to show themselves for the moldering nincompoops..that they are. If they are to move, I think Baghdad, Tripoli or Paris would be great domiciles. Maybe without the U.S. as an active member, they'll establish a Palestinian state - that would also be a great new home for them! Zimbabwe is another great option.
