They're pretty good in my area. My daughter went to public school her whole life. She was on the honor roll all 4 years. She got a 33 on the ACT, a 1390 combined on the SAT's, and is currently majoring in Electrical Engineering. Despite the examples quoted in this posting, there's plenty of public schools out there that do a fine job.

Congratulations to you and your daughter. I would imagine you had more to do with the academic achievement that did the school. But the point of the article, as I read it, was the rampant political correctness that allows such egregious examples to occur. This is prevalent in all government schools and the NEA is making sure of it.

My grandaughter is in an excellent school system,but she knows all about Rosa Parks,MLK,and even Jackie Robinson.
She knows nothing about Washington,Jefferson,FDR or Reagan.
She knows nothing about Thomas Edison or Alexander Graham Bell but she knows about the Beatles and the fact that John Lennon was shot.

All fine people to know about, just not at the expense of ignoring the founding fathers and other great americans just because they happen to be white. This example is what every american must come to realize is occurring in government schools. The NEA and other socialist educational organizations must be taken to task for this absurdity. Academic acheivement is only a part of the equation. Until dissenting voices are made know, these organizations will assume that americans like the fact that their children are being brainwashed to the socialist agenda. If you talk to most homeschoolers, academic excellence is not one of the top reasons they continue.

This isn't a lie. You're willing to make the argument that every public school is bad? That's absurd. I( and I'm sure many other Freepers)spent my entire educational career in public schools other than a private university. Many of my classmates went to some of the top colleges in the country. It's demographics that make the difference. Yes, I grew up in an upper-class community that was probably 98% white. Our parents were concerned and engaged. I realize how lucky I am because of it. It's the poor areas with single-parent or no-parent homes where you see the horrible schools. You can't make a blanket statement that all public schools are bad.

Islam results in a primitive culture because of religion. Americans are attempting to attain primitive culture through uneducation so as not to hurt someone's feelings. I don't know which is worse.
