Overall a nice article on the man, but I found something stressed in the beginning that disturbed me.
What in the world is the Secretary of Defense doing needing to sign a req for saddles and tack? Shouldn't this all be going on at a lower level? I'd like to know more about this before making a judgement, but is there a problem with micromanagement here?

I take it as anecdotal to make a point about how low tech and high tech have to be used in concert. I seriously doubt that he personally signed the requisition or wrote the check. I wouldn't be surprised though, if he had to pressure some of the perfumed princes under him to support the idea .

Good catch. I have heard anecdotal stories(from Rumsfeld/admin. supporters no less) that Rumsfeld is a micromanager and that trait goes way back to his days as a businessman. Not criticizing his strategic steering of the Pentagon, but they have concerns regarding his micromanaging style.
