If bush signs it he will lose the election and he knows it. He's already on the record as saying he will sign it when it is presented to him. He was asked about it during the 2000 election. He didn't seem too concerned then especially since after he specifically said that he would sign it, you voted for him anyway. That's the way it will go in 2004 as well. You, and most of the people here who claim they will not vote for him, will end up voting for him anyway given the alternatives. He has nothing to lose. He will get your vote anyway and he will pick up a few Democrat voters for signing it.
I hate to say all this, but it is true. I would like for the bill to quietly die, but I'm afraid it will be renewed. No one is working for its repeal. But the other side, the Brady Bunch and others, are working to keep it.

"All it takes is one more Columbine or Port Arthur, and more anti-gun legislation will be pushed through." Nonsense. Name anyfederal antigun legislation that Columbine got enacted. And that was with the Klintons as president and the Democrat Party running the Senate.

This morning during the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting with Ashcroft and Mueller, Feinstein brought up the AWB. She reminded Ashcroft that he claimed that he supported the AWB during his confirmation hearings and that President Bush made campaign promises of support for the current bill and more. She asked point blank if Justice and Bush were going to support a 2004 AWB. Ashcroft dissembled and never answered her question.
It is never too early to begin to shape congressional opinion. (800) 648-3516

To: MileHi
Thanks for the encouragement. Actually, I've harassed all of the big FR gun posters for tips, advice, etc., and I got a great collection. I may need to post a thread on it sometime, and help start a definitive compendium!
Unfortunately, I think I'm losing the most rabid peacenik's interest. In trying to help her rationalize it all, I pointed her to quotations from her heroes, Gandhi and the Dalai Lama, where they proclaimed instances where gun use was morally legitimate. She refuses to believe them, and is rather upset about it. Her staggered comments included, "well, fine, violence is always the way then, I guess" and "well Gandhi was wrong then." It looks like I watered that sapling a bit too quickly, and her Liberal chemistry is rejecting the transfusion of reality.

I don't worry much about another Columbine. I worry about a
"super Columbine." In my novel 90 shots from a semi-auto rifle causes a panic stampede in a packed football stadium which kills over 1,000 people. That kind of an event could easily lead to congress passing some very poorly thought out laws in a rush to "do something" to prevent another "assault rifle massacre."
Such an event could happen naturally as a result of insanity, or as a result of planned terrorism.

Name anyfederal antigun legislation that Columbine got enacted. Lots of states have passed anti-gun legislation, and in every case Columbine was used by proponents to sell it.

No Republican can win if he goes against the NRA that close to an election. The most eggregiously-constitutional anti-gun abomination to date was passed in October of 1996. Correct me if I'm wrong, but most of the congresscritters and Senators who passed it are still in office.

By now you're probably well aware of
House Bill H.R. 143, "Assault Weapon Ban Enhancement Act of 2003", the latest attempt to extend and expand the AWB which is due to sunset next year.
This kind of bill needs to die - FAST.
Our goal should be to kill these bills before they ever see the light of a CNN camera. We have to make sure that
ALL of these anti-RKBA bills get buried in committee - and STAY buried.
Towards that end, we need to SUPPORT and ENCOURAGE
these particular House members because THEY have these and all other anti-RKBA bills in their hands
RIGHT NOW.
The Senate is almost a lost cause - fugghetabowtit. But we have strength in the House and THAT'S where we need to focus our efforts - and our emails, letters and phone calls.
108th US Congress -
HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE - (this is where all gun-control bills are introduced in the House)Chairman - Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner Jr., R-WI: GOA rating: A
HOUSE JUDICIARY SUBCOMMITTEE ON CRIME, TERRORISM, AND HOMELAND SECURITY - (this is the judiciary subcommittee that is the first to vote on (or bury) all gun-control bills)Chairman - Rep. Howard Coble, R-NC: GOA rating: A
Subcommittee Members -
* Rep. Tom Feeney, R-FL: GOA rating: A
* Rep. Rick Keller, R-FL: GOA rating: A
* Rep. Mike Pence, R-IN: GOA rating: A
* Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-VA: GOA rating: A-
* Rep. Randy Forbes, R-VA: GOA rating: A-
* Rep. Steve Chabot, R-OH: GOA rating: A-
* Rep. Mark Green, R-WI: GOA rating: B-* Rep. Robert Scott, D-VA: GOA rating: F-
* Rep. Adam Schiff, D-CA: GOA rating: F-
* Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-TX: GOA rating: F-
* Rep. Maxine Waters, D-CA: GOA rating: F-
* Rep. Martin Meehan, D-MA: GOA rating: F-
HOUSE MAJORITY WHIP -(this is who is most responsible for "moving" bills or "sidetracking" bills in the House)* Rep. Tom DeLay, R-TX: GOA rating: A
Just look at that straight-A line-up!
THIS is what a Republican-majority can do - but the battle's just beginning now!
Now we can piss and moan all you want to about what bills are introduced and who introduced them - but THESE PEOPLE are the ones who can keep or kill them. Contact them and let them know that these anti-gun bills are blatant violations of the 2nd Amendment and "remind" them that the 'gun-control' issue was a MAJOR factor in the success of conservative Republicans in both the 2000 and 2002 elections and will continue to be so in the future.
And if you live in any of these Rep's States (or better yet their districts) you
MUST contact them OFTEN and let them hear from the people who will be voting in their next election.
Just think...
...it only takes EIGHT people in this one subcommittee to bury these bills -
DEAD.
Let'em hear from you!!!
With a
GOA-A rated Judiciary Committee Chairman, a
GOA-A rated Subcommittee Chairman, a
majority of
GOA-A rated Subcommittee members and a
GOA-A rated House Majority Whip, this has GOT to be the best chance we're ever gonna get to kill these anti-RKBA bills dead in the water.
We need to write LETTERS - emails are fine but you ALSO gotta put it on paper with a signature.
Write letters to your Reps - and KEEP writing them!

This kind of bill needs to die - FAST. You got that right, it is time for us to do something about it!
We shouldn't whine anymore, let's be active!

I completely agree with your post. I hope that there are many on FreeRepublic with the same attitudes of the Patriot founders of our country. They stood against overwhelming odds and were victorious because God was on their side. We must not have a defeatist attitude but be compelled to action. This is the only way we will win.

After this law is renewed by a republican-controlled congress and senate then signed into law by a republican president, you'll wipe the dirt off your face kicked there by the republican congressman, senators and president in September 2004 when they renew this law, then you'll go into the voting booth and elect them right back into office in November. How did that work out for SR.Bush.
