I REALLY live in the sticks and until satellite internet drops in price...will just have live with VERY slow rural telephone lines.

Thats even slow for dialup. You might not have enough memory available to load pages unless the are written to your disk. If you have other programs running at the same time try shutting them down. Also, run maintenance utilities to delete temporary files.
