"Stephen Davis Signs With Panthers!!"

"Stephen Davis is the type of running back who fits perfectly in our system," Carolina head coach John Fox said. "He is a big physical back who can handle a lot of carries. After coaching against him when I was with the New York Giants, I am very excited about having him on my side here." Davis, who was born in Spartanburg, S.C., and lives outside Columbia, S.C., gets to play close to his family. He said in a prepared release it was a "great opportunity for me to return home." The Redskins released Davis last month, saving $5.2 million under the salary cap. His straight-ahead running style also wasn't a good fit in coach Steve Spurrier's wide-open offense. Davis is the Redskins' No. 3 all-time rusher with 5,790 yards, and the only player in franchise history to run for 1,000 yards in three consecutive seasons."
