"It's hard to believe that such a significant and pervasive part of the past could be so completely erased from our history." I guess they didn't teach it up north, but they sure did in DeKalb Co., Ga. in the 50's and 60's.
Next they will discover that these slaves were sold "Down the River" to the South and after they had "divested" (unloaded) their inventory, they then abolished the practice. (And congratulated themselves about how "compassionate" they were)

"It's hard to believe that such a significant and pervasive part of the past could be so completely erased from our history." It's not hard for me to believe. It was erased for the same reason as the South's reason for fighting was erased, to make the North look good.
