Ivanov: Russia ready to veto U.S.-British resolution on Iraq to protect `international stability'
BEIJING - Russia is ready to veto a U.S.-British resolution under discussion in the U.N. Security Council authorizing war against Iraq if such a step is necessary to preserve "international stability," Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said Friday. "Russia has the right to a veto in the U.N. Security Council and will use it if it is necessary in the interests of international stability," Ivanov said at a news conference.
The foreign minister's comments came a day after China and Russia issued a joint declaration saying war with Iraq "can and should be avoided" and appealing for more time for U.N. weapons inspectors there.
The United States is seeking votes to support a U.N. Security Council resolution authorizing war. France and Russia both permanent council members with veto power over U.N. activities as well as Germany are pushing a plan to strengthen and continue weapons inspections for at least four more months.
France, which has led the opposition to military action against Iraq, is also strongly opposed to the U.S.-backed resolution. France also has veto power and has hinted it might use it.
"Of course, if you use the veto power you should fully understand the responsibilities of it before using it. It can only be used for international peace and stability," Ivanov said. "At the same time Russia will not be in favor of any new resolution which allows the use of military force directly or indirectly to solve the Iraqi issue."

Maybe Russia is rescuing France's chestnuts.

This sounds like a threat, "international stability"
From Beijing - interesting are they updating the Moscow/Beijing Pact of l950 over what to do with N. Korea?
Remember it was Stalin who got 36 divisions (120,000) of Chinese to flow south onto 20,000 UN - US/UK etc... troops in 1950-51.
Stalin gave them air cover on their trip down.

Well, that sir is an acutely valuable and timely observation.
Recall also the Vladmir Putin cut his teeth on Stalin doctrine and his gratitude for the position he know holds goes directly to the KGB.

I agree. Best favor France or Russia could do the US is to veto yet another unneeded resolution. The UN should have no post-war say in Iraq whatsoever. They screw up everything they touch.

Past three weeks all attention has been on France and
Germany, little focus has been paid to what Russia has
been doing and saying.
Last week the Communist Party Leadership visited Saddam.
Week before that Putin send the mental Ill of N. Korea
horses for his birthday.
This past weekend Putin sent Minister to visit with Saddam.
Last week or week before Russia sent China military jets.
This is a portion of what Russia has been doing with little
or no notice. We don't hear the same outcry about their
obstruction as we have with France and Germany. WHY?

Why?
Mostly because they're not a NATO member. France and Germany are.

ALL on this thread...Take notice that all the Democratic Socialists here and in other countries and countries ruled by Dictators are in lock step as are the cowardly so-called peaceniks.
Its time to move without them either with force or with a shot between the eyes of Saddam. France and Germany are in league with Iraq and dont want to jeopardize their businesses but the rest of the civilized world cant afford to wait for the next shoe to fall.
So Lets Roll call, e-mail or fax the White House and your Senators ASAP.

This nonsense has gone so far beyond farcical that whereas it wasn't even funny before...now it actually is. At this point it's just plain wacky madcap sitcom silliness. Time to get past this goofy Big Top Circus...the Greatest Show on Earth. Indeed!
