WORD OF THE WEEK Pusillanimous, adj. Lacking courage or cowardly. The pusillanimous attitudes of the French in standing up to terror will eventually come back to haunt them.

It will.

Let me take this opportunity to make a special request of all Freepers. Please read (re-read if you've already read) A Gathering Storm by Winston Churchill. This is Volume 1 of a six-volume series on WW2. (It is not necessary to read the other five volumes but they are a good read if you are so inclined.) This first volume is an incredible book and it should be read by all Americans, heck, all Westerners, for that matter.

I started re-reading this book over the weekend and I was blown away by the similarities of today's situation to the situation that existed in the 1930s.

Just as Iraq was bound by the treaties of 1991, so was Germany bound by the Versailles Treaty that ended WW1 in 1918. Winston Churchill clearly shows in this book how if only the Western powers had the fortitude to enforce the Versailles Treaty, that WW2 never would have happened and Hitler would never have come to power.

But the Allies looked the other way as Germany began blatantly violating the terms of the Treaty. For example, they were not allowed to have an airforce but they built one right under our noses. And they were not allowed to have more than 100,000 soldiers in the Army at any one time but the Allies allowed them to fudge the numbers and put the command infrastructure in place to become an Army of millions virtually overnight (which they did).

During this time, the Allies, especially England and France adopted the same pacifist policies that they are practicing today. When Hitler began reclaiming parts of Europe for Germany, such as Austria and Czechoslovakia, the Allies adopted a tone of appeasement. They sacrificed those poor countries to the Third Reich so that they could have for themselves, "Peace in our time."

Well I think we all know the rest of the story. Pacifism and appeasement do not work. In fact, these policies end up getting far more innocent people killed in the long run.

There is so much more in this book that is important to read. Everybody should read this book immediately.
