A Secret Service spokesman maintained to the Washington Post that Weaver did go through the metal detectors and that the procedure would have protected the president had someone armed and dangerous attempted a similar stunt, but few were reassured.

I'm not reassured. If, just by being able to pass metal detectors, a man can put a note into Bush's hand, then an assassin with a ceramic knife, or a C4 belly band, or a plastic spray bottle of poison can get to within touching distance as well.
