There is a theological position known as the "teliological suspension of the ethical".During World War 2 Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who was German, and a pacifist, returned from the US to his homeland of Germany and got involved in an assassination bombing of Hitler. It was morally justified thru this reasoning that even tho Bonhoeffer considered war sin, to kill a madman was justified to protect the innocent, Do you think the Pope is aware of this theological position? Those having questions about the morality of this action, might do well to think about this position.

I have a question about these polls we Freep? Is there anyway these outfits can use this as a way of showing readership when it comes to their ratings? The reason I ask this as we all know this information leads to the amount of money I think these people charge for ads and most of these people we freep I dont waste my time watching or reading and I certainly do not want them using my vote to promote anything they do. If anyone has an answer please respond.

And, to boot, Bonhoeffer was an ordained Lutheran pastor. He was one of the originators of the "Confessing Church" in Germany, the small part that resisted Hitler and his evil. He had been studying at Union Theological Seminary in NY and had returned to Germany to share the plight of his people. When seminaries were shut down by the Nazis, he formed his own community.

Bonhoeffer was arrested, imprisoned in Germany, and martyred for his part in the assassination plot. Check out the film, "Agent of Grace," for a moving and beautiful retelling of his story.

In the short run CNN would benefit from these numbers with ad revenue. However, if the placement of advertizing at CNN doesn't pan out for the seller, his advertizing will be a one shot deal, confusing the seller and ultimately downgrading CNN's appeal to sellers. Result, we're helping to reduce their power.

From the webpage for Agent of Grace

"If your opponent has a conscience, then follow Gandhi and non-violence. But if your enemy has no conscience like Hitler, then follow Bonhoeffer" Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German university professor with a doctorate in theology, a Lutheran pastor, a participant in the early ecumenical movement, a prolific writer, and a central figure in the Protestant church struggle against Nazism. His participation in the plots to assassinate Adolf Hitler led to his arrest, imprisonment, and eventual death by hanging at Flossenburg concentration camp in 1945, at the age of 39.

Only after the war, as his work was disseminated around the world by Bonhoeffer's friend and biographer Eberhard Bethge, did the fresh pertinence of his ideas become clear. Though forged in the crucible of his struggle against Nazism, Bonhoeffer's striking notions of "religionless Christianity," costly grace, and direct religious engagement with political forces -- along with his own martyrdom -- have spoken directly to the situations of contemporary Christians.
