I thought Martin Sheen was okay as Robert E. Lee. People complained about his only slight southern accent, but remember that Lee was from Alexandria, Virginia, which is about as far north as you can go and still be in the South. Also, Lee was soft-spoken and of few words, closer, actually, to how Sheen played him than Duvall did.

I didn't think that Sheen was bad, either, because Sheen played Lee the way that Shaara had portrayed him in "The Killer Angels", a man who was tired, in the enemy territory and without adequate intelligence, and a man who was trying to get the best out of the generals he had to work with.
Having said that, I'm looking forward to seeing Robert Duval as Lee.
