Someone should get Ebert and Michael Moore within each others gravitational field. We could watch as they orbit each other in ever tightening spirals until they slam together.LOL. What an image. A cosmic release of hot gaseousness.

Will you see this movie?Locally, the film will preview this evening primarily for Civil War buffs. The preview will include displays and costumed characters provided by approximately 50 reinactors and all for free.
I'm not a regular theater patron because I have a home theater so any critique from me will have to wait for severals weeks/months until the DVD is released. Hopefully with an eDTS soundtrack.
Sorry.

Oh yes, I totally agree with you regarding Sheen!!!
But Little Round Top broke my heart. It was an Alabama Regiment coming up that hill........
To this day, my son can make me cry by quoting Pickett's words to Lee. "General, I have no divison"

You know, I can put up with Eberts pathetic whining, because I just ignore it. But I relly hate the fact that his review might keep a LOT of people from seeing what is by all other accounts a great movie.

Thanks for your reply!
I thought Doug Phillips did a great job in this review. It was intended for an certain audience, those on his mailing list who by and large agree with him politically and spiritually.
His dad is Howard Phillips, of the Constitution Party. Staunch conservatives they are.
Doug is a great speaker also. He spoke to the Alabama Homeschool Assoc. several years ago. He struck me as a humble Christian.

Wow! That is interesting, the part about the preview in your area being for the Civil War buffs.
Maybe in a few months when you do see it, one of us will remember. :-)

He said it was a movie that would make Trent Lott happy...I thought that remark was so uncalled for. He is such a bigot.

I plan on seeing Gods and Generals". But because it lasts nearly 4 hours it will probably cost me having to see "About Schmidt" and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" with my wife.
I might just get it all over at once and sit through "The Hours". I think I could convince my wife that "The Hours" is as bad as two "chick movies".

Someone should get Ebert and Michael Moore within each others gravitational field. We could watch as they orbit each other in ever tightening spirals until they slam together. And then we could stand in awe as we witness the birth of a beautiful new sun. I started to type, "Fool! You're playing with forces beyond your comprehension -- you'll destroy us all!"
Then I saw your tag line. :)

Ebert didn't like Ride With the Devil either. I don't really think that he is smart enough to review a complex film. Or one that doesn't align with his prejudices.

I caught this long awaited film at a "Sneak Preview" showing in Poway last Tuesday evening. I have had an abiding interest in the Civil War for more than forty years now. So I was enthralled for the entire three hours and fortyfive minutes. To finally see Robert Duvall play Robert E. Lee was very satifying. Stephen Lang's Stonewall Jackson was powerful and true at all I have read of the man over the years. Some critics are already calling it "Boring". Well I suppose if you only had a passing interest in history in general, and little if any interest in that particular time period you might find it so.
I thought Mr.Maxwell was true to every aspect of the time and place of his story. The book, the characters, the deafening violence, the whirling insanity of an 1863 battlefield was made believable by thousands of dedicated Civil War Re-enactors. They were authentic down to the last button and belt buckle to their uniforms be they blue,or gray. The critics can pick this film apart if they want to. And I'm sure most of them will. But this Civil War buff found it stunning. In it's scope, in it's grasp of the time and subject. I have come to expect a lot less from motion pictues on the Civil War. This one was just awesome.

My son is begging me to take him. He's watched Gettysburg about ten times to date.
Looks like it's a Friday Night first run for us. It's rainy here too.
We are reading and listening on tape to Rifles for Watie, studying the Civil War, so this will be fitting. :-)

Jacksons campaign is a required "walk" at the Staff College, get a map and a real good book and drive it, brillant use of roads and rail roads, Jackson was good as a Corps commander, Longstreet was better.

Ebert's review won't keep intelligent people from going to see a movie well done. And if it is truly an excellent movie and lots of people go to see it, his review will be proven wrong.
I do have a question about this part of the above review.
After the review, my father and I drove director Maxwell home. That night we prayed with him and for him. We prayed that the final product would be pleasing to God, that God would use the film to bring honor to Jesus Christ..
How could he accept production money from Ted "Christians are losers" Turner?

You oughta get a medal. My wife and I are kind of new in town and she doesn't have a lot of girlfriends to go to movies with yet. She'd never go to a movie all by her self so I have to step up to the plate occasionally. Not often though.
