In anyone sees this movie, I would love to hear what you thought of it. I've posted this as an alternative to Roger Ebert's review.

I plan to check it out this weekend. From what I have heard so far, it's for Civil War buffs only.

I think it would be interesting to anyone. It has all the elements of human drama, yet it's not fiction.

I've heard the theatrical release is 4 hours long and the DVD will run 6 hours (not including features, etc.)

Thanks for the the advice!
My sister and her hubby are moving to Maryland this summer, so hopefully the future holds lots of opportunities to visit such places. That one whould have to be at the top of the list!!!
I read the book about Jackson this summer, by Peterson. It was excellent, but I still thought that even Peterson missed a vital element of Jackson's Christianity.

6 hours. Hmm. I could watch that in spurts. I doubt I could make it through a six hour movie at one sitting though!
Will you see this movie? If you do, would you let me know what you thought?
We homeschool and are studying the Civil War.

An epic portrayal charting the early years of the Civil War in early 1861; the tale continues through 1863, climaxing with the famous Battle of Chancellorsville. Along the way it illuminates heroes from both sides of the war, such as Colonel Joshua Chamberlain, a professor at Maine's Bowdoin College who gave up a promising academic career to enlist in the Union army, then went on to become one of the North's finest military leaders; Confederate Generals Robert E. Lee, a distinguished 25-year veteran of the United States Army and native Virginian, forced to choose between allegiance to his country and loyalty to his home state; and Thomas Stonewall Jackson, a devoutly religious man whose faith and courage and audacity made him an outstanding soldier and Lee's most trusted lieutenant.
The tremendous suffering and bravery of the Civil War was not confined to the battlefields. Also explored are the stories of the wives and families who were forced to assume responsibility at home, often in cities under direct attack from the opposition. Joshua Chamberlain's wife Fanny, Thomas Jackson's wife Anna and Jane Beale, whose family was caught in the Battle of Fredericksburg, reflect the spirit, courage and anxiety of those who were left behind.-

I called the theater for time, and it said the run time was three hours. Maybe I mis-heard---if it's three hours 50 minutes, that's closer to 4 than 3!

Casting Robert Duval as Lee is a major improvement over the miscast Martin Sheen in Turner's last outing.."Gettysburg",based on an excellent book by the way...the "Killer Angels".The defense of Little Round Top by Joshua Lawerence Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels)in that movie was intense and masterfully done...the Picketts Charge was almost anti-climatic at that point.

I just read Ebert's review. What a pathetic nutburger.
He said it was a movie that would make Trent Lott happy. He droned on about how many white actors there were.
Someone should get Ebert and Michael Moore within each others gravitational field.
We could watch as they orbit each other in ever tightening spirals until they slam together. And then we could stand in awe as we witness the birth of a beautiful new sun. 'Bout all the good that could ever come from these worthless windbags.

Bump. Thanks for posting a truly inspiring review. We did need that after slogging through Ebert's thoughtless rubbish.
