You need to research the 1997 flu outbreak in Hong Kong.

People were getting sick from avian flu. The death rate was in the 35% range. The only thing that stopped a major epidemic was slaughtering and cremating millions of chickens and other poultry.

Also, try reading the nonfiction book "The Hot Zone". We came close to having an Ebola epidemic in D.C.
