NK could be partitioned. China and America could share the burden for a few years until some of the NKs get mature enough to manage their own country.

The Chinese are devious beyond anything most Americans can comprehend. They think 6 steps ahead, which is far more than most American strategists, even ones of fair talent. They are up to something. Most likely the North Koreans were not given carte blanche but were allowed to take a stand in order to preserve their own regime (by extension China's buffer zone) and draw U.S. attention away from Taiwan.
