My son recently was hit by a different version of this scam. He was advertising for a room mate through Roommates.com and a model from South Africa contacted him. She said she was moving to the U.S. and needed a room mate. After two or three times of corresponding she wanted him to purchase an airline ticket and she would have someone from here in the United States send him a money order for the ticket, security deposit and first six months rent. This person supposedly owed her mother money. After talking to me I assured him that it was a scam. He contacted the secret service and gave them all of the info. They had him play along with the person and it turned out to be a guy who threatened to have him killed for turning them in. Our son laughed at the guy. The secret service was very interested in this new type of scam.
