1) Chariots of Fire: Visually and musically beautiful. Spiritually and emotionally thrilling. Eric Liddell believes that God is calling him to serve as a missionary, "but He also made me fast! And when I run, I feel His pleasure". I always cry during that final race.
2) U-571: I find the repetitious suspense almost unbearable; to think that submariners lived in those tin cans, under the ocean, many hundred miles from dry land, and then one frightened seaman somehow sucked it up enough to go beneath the deepest bowels of that boat, in order to do his duty...extraordinary actions by ordinary men.
3) Henry V (Branaugh): Shakespeare's incredible words; international romance; valor, loyalty, bravery; that St. Crispin's Day speech which thrills my heart each time; and a hauntingly beautiful musical theme: "Non nobis domine...sed nomine tuo da gloriam... (Not unto us, O LORD, but to Your Name give glory )" ~Psalm 115:1.
4) Babette's Feast: Babette sacrifices her artistic gift for many years out of gratitude to her hostesses. The scenes where she prepares the feast, and her honored guests partake, would serve one well in an uncivilized place.
5) Gods and Generals: Opens tomorrow! but I include it in my list upon the recommendation of Dr. Robertson, who "wrote the book", and advised the filmmaker, on the Old-Testament warrior whose genius reached its zenith at the battle of Chancellorsville.

Babette's Feast:

That's one I didn't expect to see on FR. One of my family's favorites also. Perhaps better rememembered than seen. Only for people who watch the food channel.
