Considering the trash hollyweird passes off as entertainment these days, here's a few of my all-time favorites.
My general rule: the farther from the mainstream, the better.

'The Corndog Man' - my new favorite; very difficult to find (try Blockbuster)

'Cinema Paradiso' - Italian film; very entertaining

'Avalon' - good family holiday fare

'Sling Blade' - excellent supporting performance by Dwight Yoakam

'Unforgiven' - Clint Eastwood at his best

'The Sixth Sense' - Bruce Willis' best work (IMHO)

'This Boy's Life' - nothing more frightening than Robet DeNiro in a boyscout uniform

'Bitter Moon' - Roman Polanski coaxes talent from Hugh Grant

'The Elephant man' - David Lynch directed; disturbing (but that's redundant)
