February 20, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - In a sharp attack on one of America's reluctant allies, Secretary of State Colin Powell yesterday slammed France as "afraid" of getting tough with Saddam Hussein.
President Bush's spokesman endorsed the remark and said Powell "articulately" expressed U.S. disputes with France, which opposes military force to rid Iraq of its doomsday weapons and whose president, Jacques Chirac, has told European nations that back Bush to "shut up."
