Saddam doesn't just kill people who criticize him. He kills people just for becoming "influential".
For an excellent summary of all the grim details, I recommend
the State Department's human rights report on Iraq. It makes blood-curdling reading.
I might add that the State Department is generally skeptical about regime change and has no reason to fudge the facts. I've heard virtually everything in that report from other sources as well.
