February 19, 2003 -- WASHINGTON - Saddam Hussein plans to use chemical weapons to create a ring of death around Baghdad to slow down a U.S. invasion and turn the city's residents into hostages, a former Iraqi scientist said yesterday.

It's pretty hard to cast blame when your dead. That's what the useful idiots are for...its Baldwin, Streisand, Penn, Asner, ad nauseam who will be blaming America for Saddam's chemical warfare.

"There's no way that they can find them, unless by pure accident," he said of U.N. weapons inspectors in Iraq. "Saddam has mastered his concealment tactics."
I doubt this is the case. We have used spy satellites to find 2,500 year old trading roads buried under yards of sand.
If these tunnels exist, people have to get in and out of them. Gases, water and heat must be vented, electricity must me brought in.
If they exist, we probably have a pretty good idea where they are, and what it will take to disable their capabilities.
If I were in one of these tunnels, I'd get my ass out the moment the first bomb fell.

Short effective time, but in a concentrated area, quite lethal, and if used in moderate amounts over a week's time, chem suits wear out, and not enough replacements to use 3 per troop in one month.
Rapid deployment of troops to prevent the wear out time means massive deployment of chem/bio weapons in first wave, many innocents dead.
Then, mines, times to go off days after war starts, troops advanced, in 'secure areas that were surrendered, then..BOOM, gas bomb or germ bomb goes off.
If I can think it, so can they, and probably already have. So are our troops thinking it.

I'm not saying that chemical/biologic isn't deadly.
I'm saying locking yourself into a city in the middle of a ring of contamination is a sure plan for defeat.
We wait outside the ring. They will have just beseiged themselves. It's a prescription for defeat.

At some point, Saddam's game changes from trying to stay alive to bringing as many people to hell with him as he can.

All the more reason to front load as heavily as possible all covert activities to facilitate assassination or otherwise a coup d'etat, to eliminate Saddam and the top leadership so that thousands of lives will be saved and terrible, painful deaths by unspeakable WMD will be avoided at all costs.

After Hitler realized he had lost he ordered the Berlin Subway flooded killing thousands of germans. He ordered Speer to destroy everything: factories, bridges, railroads, canals, schools. Everything because Germany had not lived up to his expectations. Speer took the orders but did not carry them out.
