A good rule of thumb for goldfish in a bowl or aquarium is when you can no longer see the goldfish it is time to change the water.

LOL!! I had a goldfish for lived for five or six years in a little round bowl on our coffee table. "Fluffy" wasn't really neglected but sure could have had her water changed more often! She actually survived a neighbor's toddler "feeding" her a glass of orange juice. We dumped her into a wire stainer, rinsed her under the faucet, and put her in a tumbler of tap water while we cleaned her bowl. She lived several years after this adventure. Eventually buried at sea, with military honors.
