Well, the deal is something that happens a lot on FR...

Irrational reactions to stupidity by the Left that go overboard and too far in the OTHER direction.

There's so much stupid crap from the NAACP freaking out over Confederate battleflags, etc. that people feel the need to counteract it, but the eventually get to the point where they're basically pretending slavery didn't exist and the South was God's Paradise on Earth, etc.

Same thing happens with environmentalism...so much nutty stufffrom the left, that now on FR even the most innocuous measure to clean up something, or regulate some pollution somewhere, or make anything into a preserve or park or protect a species in trouble gets trashed.

Where in the Constitution is the government given the power to clean up something or take land for preserves and parks?

I have never seen a post that denied that slavery existed in the South. If there is such a post, point us all to it.

The problem is that the southern bashers point fingers toward the South while ignoring that slavery existed in the northern states as well and STILL defend that their invasion of the South was to "end slavery."

The real problem is that Lincoln's status as an icon has been built up by a partial falsification and distortion of the historical record by cadre of neo-Marxist historians who worshipped his egalitarian persona rather than his actual accomplishments. Liberal historians have achieved similar "deifications" of FDR and JFK.

The childish dichotomy of "North-good South-Bad" has prevented a clearer understanding of what motivated Southerners to fight with such fury for five years in the bloodiest war in our history. In general, human beings will not endure the privations and miseries of war to make sure their rich neighbors will be allowed to keep their slaves.

What these threads about the Civil War show is that a more nuanced, balanced and accurate perspective about Southern motives and intentions is beginning to emerge in spite of the best efforts of the Lincoln deifiers.
