In 2001 a Paris appeals court threw out a subpoena for Chirac to testify whether he accepted bribes while he was Mayor of Paris. Two of Chirac's personal assistants were indicted. The last Gaullist President, Gisgard, accepted tens of millions of dollars in bribes from the African dictator Bokassa.
