'He won't listen..he must go'
TONY Blair faces a leadership challenge over his plans to attack Iraq.
The Daily Mirror has learned of a plot involving disillusioned MPs, peers and union bosses.
It would be the first such move against the Premier since he swept to power in 1997. One ringleader said: "These are firm proposals."
The Labour MP, who asked not to be named, added: "We have the numbers required to mount a challenge.
FINISHED?: Wild eyed Tony Blair insists he'll follow George Bush to war
"It is now a firm view right across the Labour Party that Tony Blair is finished because of his refusal to listen to overwhelming opposition to war with Iraq."
Our source said: "I will not speculate on who will be asked to front this challenge.
"A resolution will be constructed and put to a card vote at the party's annual conference in the autumn. If a majority of the conference vote for an election then it would be all systems go." Tony Woodley, deputy general secretary of the TGWU union, warned: "Mr Blair's in real trouble here."
In his speech at Labour's spring conference in Glasgow, the Premier said unpopularity could be "the price of leadership and cost of conviction".
Ministers yesterday rallied behind Mr Blair. Deputy PM John Prescott said the job of the leader was "to take action because it is right and just".
Government Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong admitted that the party faced a "testing time."
Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell insisted last night that the Government did not have a policy of "regime change" for Iraq.

here is what I said in my first thread here......
To our childrens childrens children
TLB 12/03/2000
When the time came to stand up for the rule of law, will we the people be too busy shopping and running around the Malls? Some of us did not care to get involved because it would interfear with that busy schedule. I mean the kids, the soccer games and football. The porno films and sex bars the internet chat sites and the drugs and drink not to mention it was just too cold out side to bother. Let someone else do it! Let someone else be the one to do it. Others said they were so sick of it all that they wished it would go away.
That was the way it was that fall of 2000. Nov 7th was like most elections days in America as I had seen since the 50's. By the early morning hours of the 8th it all changed. By darkness the takeover had begun. I witnessed Bush as President for about 1 hour that late night.
Within days we knew we were up against a real enemy. In our great land had grown a different kind of people a people focused on us the enemy in their minds. People who stand by the rule of law. In this new people was the attitiude Anything goes as long as it is for the cause ie: SOCIALISM. A foreign idea to most Americans. An idea that has failed anywhere it is tried.
By spring most money would be in the down spirial. Soon there would be street fighting. The dark days of America had come. George Washington warned us in the 1700's and yet we did not listen. I warn now but will they listen for our childrens childrens children. Will they keep this republic?
Your damn right we will.

By autumn the war will have been over for a long while and Blair will be grapelling with some other British Civil Servant Strike.

I figured the Tories were still too deep in the hole to take down Labour in the next election, but regardless, there are sufficient numbers of entrenched lefties in that cabal who are old-school enough to have never fully trusted Blair's pro-americanism and would seize an opportunity [in their own minds] to take him down.
I expect that any challenge will produce a Kinnock-style Luddite, with whom Blair would nonetheless dispatch in rather short order.

They are already thinking about impeaching Bush. They can think all they want. A republican congress aint impeaching him. In fact, I doubt they have grounds. Congress give him authorization to go to war already.
To: tonycavanagh
I bet they will back down at the last minute.
Blair's ace in the hole is that his opponents stand for nothing save one of their bums warming the PM's seat at the Front Bench. Their anti-war stance is profoundly immoral, as it leaves a brutal, fascist tyrant in the seat of power in Baghdad.
That's all the marchers stood for.
A few articles are now being published in the British press asking "where" were the anti-Saddam signs.
They were nowhere to be found, of course. Not that the marchers hated Saddam less, but they hated Bush and the Americans more. That's what animates them. The peace movement doesn't really give a rat's ass about the life being beaten out of the Iraqis.
Thankfully, George W. Bush, and Tony Blair, do. And that makes all the difference.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

I can see both Blair and Bush gone before this is over. The war with Iraq could have many unintended consequences.

Yeah

But why do you think the Left is leading such a full-court press on this? I think that the after IRAQ scenario is going to be really bad news for the Left. US power in the ascendancy, and a MAJOR hit to the world wide Leftist terror network that extends from Colombia to Ireland to Israel to India to Malaysia.
Make no mistake about this: GWI was the deflating of the OVERT world socialist military arm, GWII will be the deflating of the COVERT world socialist military arm...

As much as I detest Blair, the alternatives at the moment are non-existent on either side.

Thanks for the link. I just sent PM Blair this message:
Dear Prime Minister Blair,
I am writing to thank you for the admirable leadership you have been showing in the effort to rid our world of terrorists and madmen like Saddam Hussein.
As Winston Churchill found out, doing the right thing often draws a lot of disagreement and resentment from your opponents. It takes a truly great man to lead a nation in the right direction when a majority of your fellow politicians refuse to see the truth. So far, you have prevailed, showing a fortitude of Churchillian proportions.
May God bless you and your efforts to preserve our freedom.
Yours sincerely

John Conyers, McDermott of Washington State, Sheila Jackson Lee and at least three other members of our esteemed congress have filed suit against the President in a Court in Massachusetts.

Iain Duncan Smith, the Tory leader, is even more hardline on Iraq than Blair is. He'll back him up.
I should point out that IDS has a nice working relationship with President Bush too.

I hope this is true. A hard left takeover of the Labor party combined with a resurgence of militant unionism in the UK is the one thing which could revive the fortunes of the British Conservative Party.
Margaret Thatcher came to power in the late 70s, on a wave of public disgust at the socialist chaos which was descending on Britain as the hard left unions brought the country to a standstill with one strike after another. Sadly, the present bunch of Conservative MPs are a bunch of intimidated, navel-gazing "wets" as Thatcher used to call them. Nevertheless, even they might be emboldened if Britain decided to re-embrace radical left politics once more.

Thank you for E-mailing Mr. Blair. I imagine Mr. Blair could use prays, best wishes or a kind word right now. If you can, please, pass the address along to others.

I forgot to mention that the source of this report, "The Daily Mirror" is the most socialist of the British dailies. It is a tabloid rag that is unapologetically leftist.
This being the case, this report is simply wishful thinking from a group that longs for the days of industrial and politicial chaos.

But why do you think the Left is leading such a full-court press on this? I think that the after IRAQ scenario is going to be really bad news for the Left. The first Gulf War made Bush Sr. wildly popular and put the left wing on the ropes. Then the American people looked around and realized that the economy was still bad. This time, it could be even worse.

I can see this statement proven wrong very quickly. You had better keep a close eye on the economy, cause that is all that will count in the end.
