But some analysts say his formal response could lend credibility to a fringe campaign.

Gov. Gray Davis on Thursday responded formally to the recall effort against him, calling it a bid by "a handful of right-wing politicians" to overturn the result of last November's election.

"I can't believe the governor has committed the extraordinary blunder of actually validating the effort by responding to it," said Republican Party spokesman Rob Stutzman.

LOL!! I can! Davis is a moron. And in deeper than he thinks.

On a side note, I did a search before posting, using the word "lashes" and apparently lashing has become rather popular:

"They couldn't beat him fair and square, so now they're trying another trick to remove him from office," says the response signed by Davis.

Why is Davis referring to himself in the third person?

"I can't believe the governor has committed the extraordinary blunder of actually validating the effort by responding to it,"

My take was, 'what do you mean you can believe it?' When has Davis done anything else but blunder? Don't know who's the bigger idiot here, Davis or Stutzman. Shows you why the Repubs couldn't beat Davis in the general election. Sometimes they just don't understand what they should be saying and doing either. Especially Calif Repubs. Davis could lose here if they handled this right. But will they?

Gray Davis is completely incompetent and has demonstrated himself to be California's Jimmy Carter. Now I'm sure he's a nice guy and all but he hasn't exactly been up to the job and for that reason needs to be shown the door. I'd like to address for a moment the Los Angeles Times op-ed on Valentine's Day to the effect that it doesn't add up to the malfeasance required to remove a public official from office and that it would hurt California. I was laughing so hard when I read it. If saddling us with higher electricity costs for years plus squandering a state surplus he inherited from Republican governors isn't malfeasance, I don't know what would be. It definitely does rise to the standard requiring a recall whatever the liberals at the LAT say. As for hurting California, we're being shocked with tax increases left and right. Gray Davis has been given more consideration than an underperforming corporate CEO whose lousy sales would get him ousted from the head of the business. We Californians are shareholders with a negative return and quite frankly things would be a lot better without Davis around and a recall is a small price to pay to save California's future.

I guess following the law is a 'Trick' in California, just like it is in the state of Washington.

It's worse than that:

California accounts for 1/7th of the GDP in the country. If Bush's plan goes into effect and begins to work, Davis's "Super-tax-everyone-to-death" plan might successfully stifle or even make worse the national economy.

In other words, Davis is a poison pill.

Why would we want to remove someone who is having to deal with the mess the Dems made, and take the heat for it with the voters in the State? If a Republican was in power, they would kill the messenger when he tried to explain the mess and the possible ghastly solutions.

For the long haul, it may be better to have a bunch of average Democrats here find out personally what the realities of Democrat rule are. It worked well for New York City mayor's office and New York state governor's office.

Give Davis a chance like we gave Koch and Dinkums a chance. I love giving them rope and watching them hang everyone out to dry.

We have a tough love situation here in California. I don't think Mommy and Daddy should come to the rescue.

Good points. There may not be much of California left to save by the time Davis bungles the situation up more and the upside of a successful recall is it would put paid to his dreams of ever becoming President. That's something I don't want to ever see happen, do you?

Davis has no more chance of becoming President than Teddy Kennedy. He's dead man walking.

It would be a good time to start grooming some candidates to step up to the microphone and give counterpoint to highlight the downsides of whatever Davis proposes or does.

Is this the end of The Attack of the Clones where we have few Jedi left to fight Dark Sidious? We need to identify our good guys and evaluate their weaknesses, and start shoring them up with local office experience, or showcasing any good legislators or business people we have with touring speeches to give them exposure.

Radio Free California might be a good idea.

Are there decent leaders in the California Republican Party or are they all fighting over scraps and eating each others young in ideological battles.

Anybody got an inside to the outside in California?

Lash is a favorite action word of the educational challenged left wing writers and their challenged readers.

This was good research and thanks for sharing it with us.
