In this instance, I think Azziz is trying to use his nominal Christian status to hide behind the Vatican.

I don't have the same suspicion that they are trying to buy the Vatican to support their cause. And, given the number of Christians in Iraq and that this pope was denied the opportunity to visit Iraq less than 2 years ago, I don't think this pope has any great use for Saddam's Iraq.

Even if one postulates that the pope is being bought to give Iraq a propaganda platform, it is actually far more in the Vatican's interest to see Iraq freed than to see Iraq's Christians to continue to live under Saddam. This is much the same reason why the pope had a strong self-interest in doing what he could to aid in the downfall of the old Soviet Union.

I'm not suggesting the Vatican is necessarily being selfless. But they are at least smart enough to know that our liberation of Iraq is inevitable and that they should bet on the winner. Any transfer of payments from Saddam might be revealed when we invade and the Vatican would be held up to ridicule. And accepting money from Iraq now would make them vulnerable to blackmail by Iraq.

So, there are a number of reasons why we may assume that the Vatican and this particular pope have not been bought by Iraq. It's not that they are noble and selfless. Just that they know their own self-interest.

Taken with the beatification of the Ustashe Cardinal Stepinac, clearly the history of the forced conversion campaigns is being rewritten. I believe this is being done to make way for another such campaign.

I don't see exactly the tie-in to events in Iraq. Regardless, there is no reason to forget the Ustashe and to keep pointing out the crimes against humanity of the Croation Catholics and the offense to decency the Vatican offers by canonizing Stepinac. But it seems to me that that is another topic than current events with Iraq.

The fact that the Church attracts the hatred of bigots like you is all the assurance I need of her goodness.

That the Roman Catholic Church beautifies criminals such as Stepinac is all the assurance I need to prove otherwise.

I didn't see the thread you are talking about, I haven't seen it. I just don't agree with her assertion that a Christian leader should be jusged by national or ethnic origin.

It has been awhile, hasn't it? Wonder how many years on average are between each attempt?

I've never heard what you say about Aziz's son. I too would like to know more about him. I found on another web site that he was not an arab. Truth is, I just don't know.

I just heard on Fox News that the mayor of Rome cancelled an appointment with Azziz in protest of the dissing of the Israeli reporter, and sent him a "harshly worded letter" as well.

the Pope HAS knowingly protected pedophiles that were preying on Catholic children. (not anti Catholic, again, Please...it is just what actually happened)

Well, no, actually, that isn't what actually happened. But don't bother to dilute your hatred of Catholics with actual facts.

Even mainstream, American, Patriotic, God-Fearing, Catholics are beginning to challenge the Vatican's strange behavior.

Do us a favor, and let us speak for ourselves, 'kay? With friends like you, we really don't need enemies.

Incidentally, it makes perfect sense for the Vatican to meet with the highest ranking Catholic in the Iraqi government, to try to talk some sense into him. Which, in fact, is exactly what they tried to do.

However, as I said, don't let facts dilute your hatred.

"Pope Pius IX confined Rome's Jews to a ghetto and forcibly baptised their children as Christians. He allegedly referred to Jews as "dogs". When he died a mob tried to throw his body into the River Tiber.

Most of this is an outright lie.

For example, compare and contrast with the truth about the ghetto:

In April 1848 [Pius IX] ordered the Jewish ghetto in Rome to be abolished, its gates removed, and soldiers to be stationed there to protect the inhabitants, who, he declared, were not foreigners. He also abolished irritating impositions such as the requirement for Jews to attend the local Sunday sermon. Is this hatred of Jews?

More truth about Pio Nono here.

Your source is a Catholic site and mine is BBC.
Somehow that doesn't hold up too well.
BBC looks a whole lot more neutral to me.

If you don't revise history, present or past, to
make the pope/church look perfect, you are either a bigot or filled with hatred.

Thank you for the report. The Italian leaders have really come through in support of the US (and in reality the world), haven't they! Appreciate the update.

Believe me, we (eastern orthodox) are definitely NOT in communion with Rome. You can count on it.

I have no doubt of that, I was simply pointing out that the Chaldeans were in communion with Rome and are in fact not Eastern Orthodox.

I'm pretty sure that conservonator was making the point that the Chaldeans are not Eastern Orthodox because they are in communion with Rome.

Correct.
